I began watching the Baccano! series after visiting my friend Janice's lovely and comprehensive Baccano! fansite, Guns & Roses. There's such a huge cast of characters, I found it very difficult to choose just one favourite. It occurred in the last couple of episodes, my favourite scene in the anime: the fight on the train's rooftop between Ladd Russo and Chane Laforet. I love that scene and fell right in love with Chane. At that time, I decided to apply for the fanlisting for her and subsequently was approved to run it.

Chane is such an intriguing character! I think it's kind of rare to see a character like her. Of course, there have been many beautiful female characters with amazing fighting ability in all forms of media, but it's rare to see one who is also so quiet, in more ways than one. Chane can't speak, but she also shows little emotion on her face, even when fighting (unless horribly provoked). The only emotion that can be seen (at least in the anime version) are negative ones when her father is mentioned: sadness and determination to protect him. Then, of course, there is her beautiful (and even somewhat strange) relationship with Claire Stanfield, a superhuman assassin. It's all these factors and more than make me love Chane for who she is.

I was already beginning to get ideas to build a fansite dedicated to her when I was making the fanlisting, but due to time constraints, I could only do the fanlisting portion first. Black Diamond was opened officially on January 7, 2008, as a fanlisting only. I have to admit, it was not my most proud piece of work when it was opened, but it was pretty decent. For some reason, I find it very hard to design using Baccano! images, probably because usually it's a whole collage of characters. In any case, I started working on the actual fansite a couple weeks later. It came with new content, new design, new organization and new fanlisting codes as well.
